  • Notes
    • He followed that trade of stone mason for a few years in early life, but abandoned it and became a hotel keeper in Newportville. Tavern licenses were issued to Mahlon for the following years. 1819 and 1820 for the"Light Horse", in Bristol township, and 1835 to 1838, for "The Newportville Hotel".From 1839 to 1845 the license was issued to his brother Jacob R. Hibbs and from 1845 to1868 it was issued to his son John G. Hibbs.
In 1836 the first post office was established in Newportville, PA. and Mahlon was the first postmaster. Sometime before October 25, 1839 he is in Bristol Borough and his occupation is listed as merchant. He was a toll keeper on the canal before his death, but it appears the bulk of his money came from investing in mortgages and loans, a practice he started as early as 1832. In settling his estate his executors, son Andrew and widow Rebecca, collected $ 17,269.29 from Forty-nine individuals from whom Mahlon was holding mortgages and notes. From 1832 to the time of his death thirty-two properties were granted to him in the deed books.
