    • April 29, 1918: Bristol Grocer Near Death. Special to the Inauirer. Bristol, April 28. - A peculiar accident yesterday afternon nearly resulted in the death of Thomas Muffett, one of the leading grocers of Bristol. While driving his car past the upper end of the shipyard, near green lane, the bough of an old tree, nearly a foot thick, fell on him and his automobile. The machine was wrecked, the front glass shield smashed into flinders and the flying glass so lacerated the driver that but for the opportune presence of Dr. O'Donnell he would have bled to death. The doctor, who is connected with the Merchant Shipbulding Corporation, saw the accident and by the quick application of a tourniquet saved mr. Muffett from bleeding to death. He summoned and ambulance from the Emergency hospitalin the shipyard and finished dressing the injuries there. The leaders on the back of the grocers's left hand were completel severed and he may be crippled for life.
